The puppet musical played three shows at the Radlett Centre on 25 and 26 September, £16 to £17. The Radlett Centre's Snow White pantomime opens on 5 December.
A touring puppet musical for the under-sevens plays the Radlett Centre for three performances at the end of the month, and the cheapest way in is a family ticket at £60.
The Littlest Yak is at the centre on Friday 25 September at 1.30pm and Saturday 26 September at 11am and 2pm. It runs about 45 minutes with no interval and is recommended for ages 3 and up, which makes the Saturday 11am the obvious slot if this is a first theatre trip.
The company is LAStheatre, and the show is an adaptation of the picture book by Lu Fraser and Kate Hindley. Barra Collins wrote the book and lyrics and directs, Joseph Hardy composed the music, and Alison Alexander designed the set, costumes and puppets. LAStheatre says on its own page for the show that the production was nominated for four OffWestEnd Awards, for performance, writing, music and design.
What the company says it is
The details came to us from the show’s press office, which describes it this way:
Gertie is great at being THE LITTLEST YAK, with the CURLIEST, WHIRLIEST wool and the GRIPPIEST of hooves for clip-clopping up cliffs. Only, Gertie doesn’t want to be the littlest. She’s in a rush to grow up and be just like THE BIG YAKS. But what if there are some things that only a GERTIE can do?
And on who it is for:
The production is particularly suited to children aged 3+ and, at approximately 45 minutes, makes for an ideal first theatre experience for younger children.
The press office invited families in Radlett, Borehamwood, St Albans, Watford and across Hertfordshire, so this is being pitched at the whole borough rather than Radlett alone.
Times and prices
The press release we were sent says tickets start at £16 with family tickets available. The venue’s own listing for the show sets out the full range: £17 standard, £16 for ages 1 to 16, £60 for a family ticket, £12.50 a head for schools on a 10 for 9 basis, and £3 for babes in arms under 12 months, which the centre sells through the box office only rather than online.
A family ticket at £60 is worth checking against the alternative before you book. Two adults and two children bought separately come to £66, so the family price saves £6 on that combination.
Getting there
The Radlett Centre is at 1 Aldenham Avenue, Radlett WD7 8HL. The box office is on 01923 859291 and is open Monday to Friday 10am to 2pm, Saturday 10am to 4pm, and from 45 minutes before a performance.
Parking is the thing to plan for. Newberries, the only council car park in Radlett, has been dug up for resurfacing since early September, with fewer usable spaces than its normal 196 and the parish council warned to expect significant disruption and occasional single-lane access. No end date has been published. Borough tariffs are on our parking page and current closures on the roadworks and travel page.
What it means for you
If you have a three or four year old and have been waiting for something short enough to risk a first theatre trip, this is the shape of thing that usually works: 45 minutes, no interval, and an 11am start on the Saturday before anyone is tired. Three performances across two days is a small allocation for a borough this size, and the Friday show is at 1.30pm on a school day, which effectively leaves two family slots.
It also lands in a gap. The Radlett Centre’s next big family booking is Snow White from 5 December, and the borough’s other half-term draw, Aldenham Country Park’s Spook-Fest, does not open until 10 October. More to do locally is on our things to do in Borehamwood page.
